Lead on a foundation of two inseparable attributes of God -justice and righteousness. Psalm 89:14 says, "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne," emphasizing the importance of both in the governance of God's Kingdom. Yet, many governments, churches, and peoples of faith struggle to balance these two principles.
Justice without righteousness might address societal wrongs but fail to reflect God’s holy standard. Righteousness without justice, on the other hand, can lead to self-righteousness or a lack of concern for the suffering of others. This imbalance is like trying to walk with one leg without assistance —you cannot move forward effectively, you are imbalanced and incomplete.
Both ideas can be better integrated for getter effectiveness. Abraham Lincoln had to balance righteousness and justice as he navigated the moral imperative to end slavery while ensuring the Union remained intact. Navigating issues like abortion requires balancing both righteousness and justice—considering not only what is the rights of the mother but also the fairness owed to the unborn child. The ministry of Jesus demonstrated this balance: He forgave sinners (righteousness) while defending the oppressed (justice).
As leaders, we must reflect this harmony in our lives, advocating for justice and implenting righteousness in our lives and spheres of influence. These ideas must be prosecuted in the heart, while in prayer to God, so that we present to the world solutions.
