Sharpening Our Knives

Leading with Integrity and Skill

We must put in the work to sharpen our knives - our tools, gifts, and talents God has given us.

The story of Gilgal is rich with spiritual lessons, one of which is the necessity of preparation and renewal for the next generation. When the Israelites crossed into the Promised Land, Gilgal was the first place they camped, and it was where the new generation underwent circumcision—a sign of covenant renewal. However, this act required sharp knives, representing the need for prepared and effective tools to carry out God’s work.

Today, "sharpening our knives" is a call for leaders to refine their spiritual gifts, skills, and talents. We often attempt to instruct or lead others with "dull knives"—unpracticed abilities, neglected faith, or undeveloped knowledge of God's Word. Giving God our hearts, seeking His approval, and sharpening our spiritual tools are necessary to guide the next generation into their covenant with God.

Gilgal also serves as a reminder that where God once moved might not be where He is now. Are we clinging to outdated methods or unrenewed hearts while trying to fulfill God’s mandate? Let us sharpen our knives, prepare ourselves, and lead with integrity and skill.
